Wedding and Summer Party Hats and Headpieces

The Wedding season is almost here - hooray! There's nothing better than summer in England, cricket pitches, pub garden lunches and a good old wedding. This year I am invited to my little brothers fabulous Gatsby inspired 1930's wedding and that is absolutely one of the eras where headpieces were De Rigueur. So with headpieces, hats and fascinators in mind for the Wedding Season, I have asked the very talented milliners Rachel and Sarah of Lomax and Skinner - Bespoke Milinery, to showcase some of their beautiful creations. Because I am a feminine dresser and don't enjoy too much drama I really love their veiled hats and fascinators. I know my lovely Mum would like the more traditional and classic wide brimmed black hat in the blog, which one is for you...?

A wedding is the perfect opportunity to treat yourself and have a hat made. The right hat or cocktail piece will transform your outfit from a pretty melody to a fully orchestrated symphony and so now is the time to start thinking millinery!

If you are after a bespoke piece you will want to have plenty of time to discuss shapes, colours and trimmings with your milliner as well as time for a fitting whilst it's being made and enough time with the finished hat in your possession to feel confident your outfit is perfectly in tune.

Your milliner will be able to advise you on the most complementary style of hat for your outfit and your individual look but it's a good idea to go along with a few thoughts of styles that you like.

In recent years the younger royals have been doing a fantastic job of making millinery current and stylish. Sophie, Countess of Wessex is always worth watching as is of course Kate the Duchess of Cambridge. She alone has got everyone talking hats again. The fashion and celebrity blogs and magazines will be full of beautiful hats and inspiration.

Fascinators have been very popular due to the lightness and ease of wearing and nothing can look prettier than a few well placed flowers and feathers and maybe a touch of veiling softening the face and adding an aura of mystery.

There are times when you have the desire, or need for something a little more formal, a little more 'hatty' and the recent trend has certainly been going towards the many variations there are on the pill box and cocktail shapes.

The trimming and precise shape of this style of hat is limitless and here at Lomax and Skinner we create an individual and stylish look from handcrafted flowers and manicured feathers all of which can be dyed to match or contrast with your outfit.

Larger hats will always be fashionable. A brim upturned on one side dramatically sweeping across the face is extremely flattering and elegant. If you are doing a lot of meeting and greeting at your occasion this style will still give easy access to your cheek for kissing... and won't cause shadows across the face in those all important photographs.

There are few limitations in millinery, the variations on style, fabric choice, colour and trim are endless and the experience of having a hat made for you is extremely fun and exciting.
