Autumn Layering For Men
Autumn Layering For Men
It is feeling very seasonal today as I sit and type this with chilly hands - definitely time to add a few more layers. Layering is a great way to dress when the temperature drops because now only do you have the option of taking pieces off throughout the day if the temperature changes you can experiment with mixing different textures creating a stylish interesting look. Wearing a chunky knit over a checked shirt or wearing denim underneath leather are good ways to veer away from the usual men's choice of a thin cashmere knit over a checked shirt. This tried and tested smart/casual staple has been around for years now, it must be time to experiment a bit and mix it up!
Experimenting With Layering
The Denim Jacket
I love denim jackets in the summer and I love them for layering in the winter. They look great buttoned up to the top and worn with a coat over the top. Any coat looks good over a buttoned-up denim jacket, wool, puffa, leather, but for a more relaxed weekend look a bomber jacket would work well. The bomber jacket below is great quality by Barbour from Selfridges:
The Shawl Cardigan
This is a stylish winter warmer if ever there was one. They come in thin or thick knits, cable, ribbed, pain and patterned. Layer one of these over a checked shirt, under a suit too if it's really cold: They look good at the weekend just with jeans and boots and in my opinion would be a valuable addition to almost every man's wardrobe.
Waistcoats and Gillets
Add a waistcoat underneath your suit for extra warmth and finesse. In fact, waistcoats now have become a bit of a staple and can be worn with jeans or chinos. My all time favourite look is a man in well cut tailoring but with a twist, like a tweed waistcoat (one below by Racing Green at House of Fraser) or maybe some boots instead of brogues. At this time of year the heavier tweed and wool suits look great with the addition of a waistcoat. Another option is a gillet, it is a lot more casual but might suit your work environment and style personality:
Tweed Jackets with Denim & Chambray Shirts
Tweed heritage warm blazers are a style winner this season with regard to looks and practicality. M&S, have some great tweed blazers at reasonable prices. Layer one with a vintage-look denim shirt for a brilliant smart casual combination - add chinos to complete the look.
Chunky Wool Scarf or Silk Paisley
Now for the finishing layering touch - the scarf. John Lewis do some great wool chunky scarves that give a pleasant change to the usual thin cashmere coloured scarf lots of men wear. The chunkier the better really to make a good statement.
An alternative that looks great but won't keep you very warm is a silk scarf. The mix of wool blazer with a denim shirt and silk scarf is a great texture clash. Paul Smith do brilliant silk scarves.
