I’m currently two weeks into running my brand new digital style club ‘How to Find Your Personal Style.’ Over five weeks I’m covering the five easy steps to style - how to nail your personal style and love everything in your wardrobe.

One of the questions that came up is what to wear to events that are casual but you want to look nice. The lady on my course said she often feels as though she either dresses up too much or is too casual and wasn’t sure how to pitch an outfit in the middle.

I pretty much dress in this middle spot most of the time and I like the phrase ‘elevated casual’ which seems to be being bandied about lately.

My natural personal style means I tend to like to dress in an elevated casual way most of the time anyway. Not too scruffy/casual and not too dressed-up mean I always feel comfortable.

I’ve got a few ‘go-to’ outfit combinations that work a treat for this kind of approach and would work for lots of low-key social events. To be honest, most events now are either low-key or even virtual so dressing up big time is on the back burner.

Outfit 1: Metallic Pleated skirt

Still a winner for me! A pleated metallic skirt with a thin knit and boots or shoes. This look always makes me feel a bit glam because of the sparkly metallic touch.

When it gets closer to Christmas, swap the metallic skirt for a fully sequinned one for a really easy look.

Outfit #2 - A nice dress!

A mantra I use that has worked for me on many occasions is ‘if in doubt, wear a dress!” - No need to faff around with different outfit combinations, if you make sure you’ve got a couple of nice dresses you will always have something to wear for casual or smarter social events.

I would wear these with long boots like the Boden version above or with ankle boots in autumn.

The cost-per-wear you get from a dress will be fantastic too.

I ALWAYS rely on dresses when I have a special event and this Monday I had a new client and wore my new ALL SAINTS dress which you can see here on Instagram.

I also love this fully sequin dress - new-in at H&M. Perhaps a bit OTT for most casual events but not as we edge nearer Christmas!

Looking for something slightly less glam but still smart then Hush have loads of choice.

Finally on the dress outfit - I really love a relaxed knitted dress which covers you for many occasions including a chilly bonfire night!

Also, if you are feeling a little bloated after months of lockdown the good news is loosely fitted is IN! Hush have loads of options that will look cool and effortless if you prefer a less fitted dress:

Outfit #3 - A tulle skirt with a thin (or chunky and long) knit

Admittedly this is pretty close to the metallic skirt with a thin knit outfit but it works for me! Tulle skirts add interest and a feminine vibe but are still cool - especially when toughened up with chunky boots.

My outfit below is an old H&M tulle skirt - a Dior copy. Plus current season HUSH star jumper and old Russell and Bromley long boots.

A pair of long boots will go with everything here or wear with tights and biker boots or Chelsea boots.
